Book 12 | Working for Equality
Policy, politics, people
Richard Freeman, Fiona McHardy, Danny Murphy (Editors)
Equality is a hugely important topic for most Scots and many of us want to see a more equal society. But what kind of equality do we want, and how, in practice, might we achieve it?
This book brings together a group of experienced practitioners from across the country to reflect on ways of Working for Equality. They focus on class, race, gender, poverty, disability and homelessness as well as health and education. They are concerned with individuals as well as ideas and policy instruments. Each article is short and accessible, a pause for thought for those most concerned with action.
These contributions are postcards from the frontline, as well as from backstage, where much of the work aimed at reducing inequality takes place. They show something of what it entails, reflect on what it has achieved, express their frustrations and identify the challenges which remain.
Richard Freeman is Professor of Social Science and Public Policy at the University of Edinburgh.
Fiona McHardy is Research and Information Manager at the Poverty Alliance.
Danny Murphy is a retired secondary school headteacher and Honorary Fellow of the University of Edinburgh.
The book is available to order on this website and will be available from 27th October 2017.
